Our Story
Flourishing in Ministry began with a simple, research-backed observation: pastors and ministry leaders are expected to do everything well but are trained for almost none of it — and they often carry their heaviest burdens alone. Over 15+ years, a research team led by Dr. Matt Bloom at the University of Notre Dame studied more than 20,000 ministry leaders to understand what allows some to thrive while others burn out.
That research produced the Five Dimensions of Flourishing model, the backbone of everything FiM does. Rather than treating burnout after it arrives, FiM focuses on prevention — equipping leaders with the practices, coaching, and relationships that help them stay whole. As Dr. Archibald Hart put it, “Pastors don’t get into difficulty because they forget they are pastors… they get into difficulty because they forget they are persons.”
Today, FiM is housed within Biola University’s Mental Health and the Church Initiative and led by Rev. Chris Adams, PhD, a clinical psychologist, ordained minister, and third-generation pastor’s kid, alongside Dr. Sylvia Hart Frejd, MCC, who directs FiM’s ICF-accredited coach training. FiM serves ministry leaders through coaching, coach training, organizational consulting, speaking, assessment, and an alumni coaching network.
The Five Dimensions of Flourishing
FiM’s core model. The #1 predictor of flourishing in the research is a positive, mutually supportive relationship between a pastor and their congregation.
