This report looks at ministry life through the metaphor of a theater: the front stage where ministry is performed, the back stage where leaders are supported, and the off stage where they are renewed. Flourishing depends on all three.
- Authenticity makes ministry more effective. The more authentic a person can be in their roles, the more stirring and proficient their work becomes.
- The back stage is where leaders recover. Support relationships are where pastors review hard moments, receive care, and build ways of coping.
- Similar others matter most. Peers who carry the same weight can empathize and give expert feedback in a way that other supporters cannot.
- Many pastors have no back stage at all. This is especially true for solo pastors, where the structure of the role leaves little room for it.
